First time in forever that I have, quite literally, 27 hours to turn a C+ Wired story into an A-. Not sure I have what it takes, especially since this lede ain’t even close to humming, but I owe the good folks in San Francisco my best shot. Back to y’all once the tale is safely in my editor’s hands; ’til then, meditate upon Robert Diggs’ first spin through the celebrity machine, before Wu-Tang was even a glimmer in his eye.

Not too surprising that Wu-Tang ended up being so grimy. I can just imagine RZA thinking “I put out this whack, sell-out shit and don’t even get anywhere with it? Screw that stuff.”
Also from the same era, ODB and RZA live:

@Jordan: I feel like there’s an A.V. Club “Inventory” feature to be done about great artist’s false starts. RZA can’t be the only one who reinvented himself very early in his career, after a initial flameout.

Thinking purely in the hip-hop realm, Mobb Deep Common and The Fugees all come to mind as having lauded sophomore albums, but mostly forgotten initial LPs.
